Cavtat
Cavtat is located 18 km to the south of Dubrovnik and only a few kilometers from Dubrovnik airport (Ćilipi). The old town lies in an inlet between two small peninsula, Rat and Sustjepan. It is the centre of the most southern Croatian region, Konavle.
Cavtat is an ancient settlement, it was found by the Greek as Epidaurum in 689 BC. The Romans had an important military base here that was supplied with fresh water via an aquaduct. The Slavs arriving in the 7th century did not treat the inhabitans with kid gloves; those who were not killed escaped to the area of today's Dubrovnik so they are regarded as the founders of Raguza. The Italian name for Cavtat also confirms this story: Ragusa Vecchia means Old Raguza. From the Middle Ages the village stood under the protection of the Republic of Raguza for centuries.

The former Rector's Palace houses the collection that is devoted to the renowned scientist, Baltazar Bogišić. Besides the heritage (photos, letters, furniture) of the Croatian academician, a library and a numismatic collection can be found here. The sculpture of the scientist sitting in a comfortable armchair is situated in front of the palace.
Mausoleum of the Račić-family
The cemetery and the mausoleum can be found behind the Franciscan monastery. The tomb crowned with the tympanum is the work of the famous Croatian sculptor, Ivan Meštrović. Almost all tombstones bear the same year referring to the Spanish flu that caused the death of many family members.
