Karlovac (www.karlovac.hr) known also as 'the town of the rivers' was founded by the Archduke Charles II of Austria in 1579 as a part of the strengthened frontier zone against the Turkish raids. Lying at the confluence of the Kupa, Korana  and Mrežnica rivers, the town was originally named after the Archduke as Karlstadt (Charles' Town in German). Karlovac lost its significance in the 19th century. During the Croatian War of Independence it was very close to the front lines and suffered serious damages.

Old town

Set within the walls of a fortress built at the time of the Turkish raids, the old town of Karlovac has an unique star shape. In the centre of the main square, Trg Bana Jelačića, a well with four allegorical figures symbolises the rivers of Karlovac. The square is surrounded by baroque merchant houses and barracks, most of them were devastated in the War of Independence.

The baroque Church of the Holy Trinity on the southern west side of the square was built together with the fortress while the Franciscan monastery is from the 17th century.
