Pag

Pagi bírkák

Pag (www.otokpag.com) is the longest island of Croatia. In spite of its bare and rocky surface, it has breathtaking beauty. The plantation of the island consists of hardly anything but straggling grass and herbs. These are the feed of the Pag sheep, the 'suppliers' of the well-known Pag cheese. Pag island is also famous for its lace.

The administrative centre of the island is Pag town. It is a not too busy settlement with a nice old town. Novalja on the north-western coast has become a party-goers' mecca, the 'Croatian Ibiza'. In the summer the famous Zagreb clubs, Aquarius and Papaya move to beach Zrće to entertain electronic music fans. Lun lies on the northern tip of Pag. It has an unique oil tree plantation called Lunjski Maslinici which consists of 80 000 trees.

Pag

Pag town is an ancient settlement, its name was mentioned for the first time in a 10th-century manuscript. The medieval Pag emerged near the salt pans, about 3 km south of the present location. In the 15th century as the Ottoman threat kept rising, the inhabitants decided to build a new town. This was surrounded by walls and nine watch towers from which only the Skrivanat tower has preserved by today.

The old town of Pag is packed with fine noble palaces including the 15th-century Rector's Palace, once the seat of the town's notables.

The Church of the Assumption is situated on Trg kralja Petra Krešimira IV. It was built in 1443. In front of its gate, the statue of Bartul Kašić, the author of the first Croatian grammar can be seen. The Church of St. George (Ulica Jurja Dalmatinca 48.) was named after the town's patron saint. Today it hosts a gallery.

The Benedictian monastery of St Margaret (Koludraška ulica) is from 1318. It is famous for baškotini, a traditional aromatic biscuit made here according to a secret recipe.

The old salt warehouses were built in the first half of the 1600 years at the site of the former St. Peter's Abbey. The first six of them were owned by a Šibenik merchant.

Novalja

Novalja is a small village on the west coast of Pag. In the summer its Zrće beach becomes a party paradise. The parties take place beside the pool of the open-air Aquarius, Papaya and Kalypso bars, the former two are the summer reincarnations of the Zagreb clubs. In 2010 Papaya club hosted the region's superfestival, Get Exited for the first time.

The most interesting attraction of Novalja is the underground aqueduct, Talijanova buža built in the 1st century AD. This amazing 1050 m long and 60 cm wide corridor was carved by human hand. Its entrance is in the building of the town museum (Kralja Zvonimirova 27).
