Plitvice

Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the most renowned attractions of Croatia. Lying at the foot of Mala Kapela and Lička Plješevica mountains, it occupies an area of 266 km2. Plitvice lakes consists of 16 larger and some smaller emerald lakes which are situated at different sea level. The series of these so-called 'upper' and 'lower' lakes and the incredible waterfalls and cascades which connect them make up this unique geological miracle. The lakes are surrounded by dense forests, the home of deers, wolves, bears, fire salamanders and snakes.

Plitvice is the first national park in Croatia and since 1979 it is the part of the UNESCO World Heritage. During the Croatian War of Independence the park was under the control of the Republic of Serbian Krajina for 4 years. Being the part of the independent Croatia again, Plitvice has become one of the symbols of Croatian national identity. After the war the damages were fully restored.

The highlights of the park:
 - Kozjak, the largest and the deepest lake
 - the 70m tall Veliki Slap (Great waterfall)
 - Sastavci, one of the most spectacular waterfalls
 - the entrance of the cave Supljara located above Lake Kaluderovac
 - boardwalks going right over the waterfalls
 - Velike kaskade (Great cascades)
 - Milanovački Slapovi (Milanovački waterfalls)
and many more...
